John Abel Buckholts, Texas legislator, was born October 14, 1825, in Amite County, Mississippi, son of John G. and Adeline (Blocker) Buckholts. Buckholts grew up and was educated in Mississippi. In 1846 he enlisted in Company D of the First Mississippi Rifles and fought under Jefferson Davis in the Mexican War. He was discharged for disability at Matamoros on September 12, 1846. Following the war he relocated to Texas, settling and opening a law practice in Milam County. John Buckholts married Drucilla Heslip in 1860; they had one daughter. In 1861 John A. Buckholts represented Milam County in the state legislature, and in 1866 he was elected judge of the Third Judicial District. In 1870 he moved to Bryan in Brazos County where he served as county judge. In 1881 Buckholts donated land for the right-of-way of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway through a western portion of Milam County as well as 113 acres for a townsite. The town was named Buckholts in his honor. John A. Buckholts died May 25, 1898. tshaonline.org
