Berwin was born on September 1, 1935 in Beatrice to Berwin and Katherine (Burroughs) Shaffer, Sr.
Dick grew up in the Beatrice area and lived here all his life.
He attended Country School District #34 and graduated from Beatrice High School in 1955, the first class to graduate from the new high school.
Dick retired as a Command Sergeant Major after 40 years in the Army. He spent 2 years in Germany on active duty and the remainder in the Army Reserve.
He married Roselyn Burd on November 16, 1958 in Fairbury, Nebraska.
Along with farming the 103-year-old family farm for most of his life, Dick retired as a Project Manager after 29 years with Agrium (a plant making nitrogen-based fertilizers).
He was a member of the Pickrell United Methodist Church, American Veterans (AMVETS), and the Gage County Agriculture Society. Dick was a past member of the Elks and Eagles Clubs.
He enjoyed Nebraska Football, FOX News, and his grandchildren.
Berwin R. “Dick” Shaffer, Jr., 79 years of age, of Beatrice, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in Beatrice.
Dick is survived by his wife, Roselyn; 4 children, Berwin R. “Rick” Shaffer, III of Lincoln, Nebraska, Peggy (David) Doering of Beatrice, Nebraska, Joy (Chris) Turner of Jefferson, Georgia, Brian (Miriam) Shaffer of Canoga Park, California; 6 grandchildren: Leah Shaffer, Natalie Doering, Jackson Bowen, Campbell Turner, Brandon Shaffer, Samantha Shaffer; step-grandson, Greg Mockenhaupht and family; and a sister, Sue (Larry) Frahm and family of Denver, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Calvin Shaffer.
Family and friends are invited to come and share memories of Dick any time between 1:30 and 3:30 pm Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Chautauqua Park in Beatrice. There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place but a register book will be available to sign from 1 to 8 PM with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 PM on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. Memorials are suggested to the Pickrell United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
