MR. BENJAMIN LAPPIN THE
VICTIM.
While working in the Chiltern Valley
No. 8 mine, on Wednesday, Mr Benjamin
Lappin was killed by a fall of earth
and timber...
...The manager (Mr J. Cock) who
was on the mine, speedily got the men
to work to remove the debris and he
never left the place until 11 o'clock at
night when the body was recovered.
The relays of men who were present
worked liked Trojans and it was with
great regret that they found life extinct
when their old comrade was discovered.
His three brothers, Messrs William,
Jacob and Alfred, were present at the
mine during the operations, and lent
valuable help in the relief work...
...Deceased, who was 40 years of age,
was the son of the late Mr James Lappin
and a native of Xmastown. For up
wards of 25 years he had been employed
by the Chiltern Valley Company...
...The
greatest sympathy is felt for his widow
and three little children, the eldest being
about five years of age, who have been
bereft by their breadwinner.
