service Oct. 22, 1862. He was mustered out Aug 5, 1865. He then

Savings bank.

in 1874 to enter the office of the fork and hoe factory established
on the Moose river by his father, George W. Ely, in 1848. Upon the
death of his father in 1876 he became a member of the firm and
when the Ely Hoe & Fork company was incorporated in 1880 he was
elected treasurer and later president. He held this offìce until 1902
when the corporation was merged with the American Fork & Hoe
company. Since that time he has been a director in the latter concern
and manager of the Ely works.
Mr. Ely married at St. Johnsbury on Oct. 31, 1867, Miss Adelaide Newell,
daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Selim Newell. For a few years after their
marriage they lived in Northfield coming back here in 1874. Two years

Gen. Pershing's army. Besides his wife he leaves four daughters, Ellen,
wife of George W. Kyburg of Springfield, Mass., Miss Caroline Denison
Ely, Mrs. Margaret E., wife of Lindol M. Scott; Miss Mary Redington Ely,

Carolyn Ely, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott. Of a family of eight children
only one brother is living, William H. Ely, of Hoosic Falls, N. Y. . Among
the relatives living at a distance who were unable to be here. are two
nieces, Mrs. Robert Hannah of Fergus Falls, Minn., and Mrs. Charles
Macwhorter of Chicago, and a nephew, Philip Eastman of Topeka, Kan.
Mr. Ely was a trustee of the Passumpsic Savings bank, a member of
Chamberlin Post;, G. A. R., and a life deacon of the South Congregational
church. He was through his lifetime one of our leading manufacturers,
a loyal citizen of the town and deeply interested in its welfare. He was
ever ready to help in any movement for a better St. Johnsbury and
was liberal in his support of every cause. In the South church he was
many years an active member and St. Johnsbury may well mourn the
loss of one of its best citizens.
The funeral will be held at the South church vestry Saturday afternoon
at two o'clock conducted by his pastor, Rev. Dr. F. A. Poole.
