Wesley Ernest Spikes was born in Spikes Prairie in Kaufman County, Texas. He was the seventh child of Capt. John Wesley Spikes and Julia Ann Fox. After a few years he and his family moved first to Estacado, Texas and soon after to Emma, Texas, both on the South Plains near Lubbock, Texas. In the late 1890's he moved with brothers John Julian, George Richard, and Samuel Israel and helped establish a ranch near the northern part of Mesa Redondo near Tucumcari, New Mexico. After ranching a few years, he moved to California.
