He fitted for College at the High School in Cambridge; graduated Harvard University, 1856; spent a short time in his father's store in Boston; went west in 1859; was engaged in teaching, and, after removal of his father to Beloit, lived with the family, occupied with the business of farming.
In 1864, he served three months in Tennessee, as Sergeant of Co. B, 40th Reg. Wis. Vols.
While a member of College, he made a profession of religion, joining the Shepard Congregational church, and for some years cherished a desire, if not purpose, to study theology and become a minister; but weak eyes and poor health turned his course another way, and he was content to do good in the sphere and circumstances providentially allotted him.
A consistent Chritian, devoted son, warm and genial friend, he left behind a good name, and a memory pleasant to cherish.
