Fr. Eligius Kozak, 95, OFM Conv., died Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Holy Family Infirmary, Enfield, CT. Born in Poland on June 8, 1919, son of the late Wawrzyniec and Katarzyna (Szczesniak) Kozak, he entered the Novitiate of the Conventual Franciscan Friars in Niepokalanow, Poland in 1937. It was during the Novitiate that he met Fr. (and later Saint) Maximilian Kolbe who served as his Novice Director. He professed his final vows in 1942. After completion of his Theological Studies at Lvov, Poland (now the Ukraine) he was ordained to the priesthood there on August 30, 1942. His early ministry was in Poland, but Fr. Eligius came to the United States and assisted with the Fr. Justin Rosary Hour, Athol Springs, NY for 24 years. This Polish radio program is still a powerful evangelization tool for both Canada and the United States. In 2003 he was assigned to St. Stanislaus Parish in Chicopee to assist with Mass and confession. It was at St. Stanislaus that he became a beloved figure for the Polish-American community. When the friars opened St. Hyacinth Senior Friars Residence he remained there until shortly before his death. He was predeceased by his eight siblings. He leaves a dear niece in Poland whom he visited in this August, traveling by himself. Fr. Eligius will lie in state at St. Stanislaus Basilica, 566 Front St. Chicopee on Sunday, October 19 from 6-8PM with a Polish Prayer Service at 7:30PM. On Monday, October 20 he will lie in state at the Basilica from 9-11AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM. Interment will be in the Friars Plot at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Chicopee. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franciscan Education Burse, 12300 Folly Quarter Rd., Ellicott City, MD, 21042. kozikowskifuneralhome.com
