Robert enlisted and was elected a 2nd Lieutenant in Company "C", 5th Battalion (the "Arsenal Battalion"), Richmond Local Defense Troops, on 24 June 1863, and was promoted Captain on 11 August 1864.

He left that unit to enlist at Camp Lee, Virginia as a Private in Company "I", 15th Virginia Infantry on 15 October 1864. He ended the War hospitalized at Chimborazo Hospital. After the War, he worked as a lighthouse keeper.

He died on Dock Street in Richmond of "Consumption", per Cemetery records. His grave in the Eliza Ann Griffin plot is unmarked.
