Puritan stone ("death's head angel").

Re-carved Inscription
------------------------------------------
A 300-year old stone will often have been re-carved. Guessed spots can be detected.
-----------------------------------------
"Here lyes ye
Body of Elener
French ['AND of'? Changed to 'WIFE of'?]
John ['FRENTCH'? 'FRENCH'? ]
aged 8* Years.
Died A****, **** "
===========================================
Earlier Reading of Inscription
-------------------------------------------
A book on the "History of Quincy" guessed differently about the faded spots:
-------------------------------------------
"Here lyes ye
Body of Mrs. Elinor
French, Wife of Mr.
John French,
aged 85 Years.
Deceased April 23, 1711.
===========================================
Comparison, the book
*Used "Elinor" while the re-engraver chose "Elener",
*Added "Mrs.", when there was no space on the stone for that,
*Changed "dyed" to "deceased", too modern, too long, and
*Added punctuation that non-fussy Puritans skipped.
The book put it all in one sentence, to save space.
