Doyle was the son of Doyle and Betty (Henderson) Hermann. His father passed away when Darrel was 6 months old and his mother later married Cliff Proctor, and it was Cliff whom Darrel called Dad.

Darrel grew up in Deary and attended the local schools, graduating from Deary High School with the class of 1967. He went on to attend Spokane Community College and earned his tradesman certificate in welding.

Darrel met Elizabeth Rantanen and they married on March 21, 1969. They made their home in Deary, where Darrel had a long and fulfilling career in the timber industry. Over the years, he worked for Bennett Lumber, Potlatch Corp., Lawson Logging and, most recently, Pine Creek Logging.

He enjoyed four-wheeling with his grandchildren, camping, hunting, gardening and cooking. His family described him as an expert jam maker. He enjoyed all types of sports and was particularly fond of Gonzaga basketball, NASCAR races and Seattle Mariners baseball. In his earlier years, Darrel played town-team baseball in Deary-Bovill and was also a Boy Scout troop leader for more than 10 years. He was also a longstanding member of the Masonic Lodge, Unity No. 32 of Genesee.

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle Hermann and Cliff and Betty Proctor, as well as his son, Robert Doyle Hermann.
