Fay Mitchell, 92, of Vermillion, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Sioux Valley Care Center in Vermillion.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 17, 2006, at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion with Pastor Paul Opsahl officiating. Interment followed at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.
Fay Anfinson was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Wakonda, the daughter of Anton and Millie (Lindgren) Anfinson. She was raised in Wakonda where she graduated from high school. She moved with her family to Lead.
On Oct. 18, 1937, she married Harold F. Mitchell in Deadwood, where they made their home. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Black Hills State University in 1967. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a teacher in Lead and Sioux Falls.
Upon the death of her husband, Harold, she moved to Vermillion, in the spring of 1979. Fay continued her work in the education field for several years as a teacher's aide in the Vermillion Public Schools. Her love of music and playing the viola led her to audition for the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra where she played until her retirement.
Fay was a member of the United Church of Christ and was actively involved in the Vermillion Senior Citizen Center. Fay enjoyed reading, trout fishing, and sports of all kinds. She was an avid USD Coyote fan and followed all of their games by radio.
Survivors include her sons David and his wife Linda, of Rapid City, and Larry and his wife Elizabeth, of Vermillion; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; brother, Lawrence; and sister Marguerite.
