Samuel "Sam" Elliott Talkington was born December 5, 1877, in Corning, Adams County, Iowa, to parents Lafayette "Lafe" and Maria Baldwin Talkington. He had two older siblings which were William Harrison and Allie May Talkington.
Before long the family moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where Maria died September 8, 1887, during childbirth when both mother and son died.
Lafe had three children to raise and on August 8, 1889, he married Jane "Jennie"Seapy in Mahattan, Kansas. She brought into the relationship a three year old son, Fred, who Lafe raised as his own. In 1890, the family moved to Stroud, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, where Lafe purchased a 160 acre farm three miles northwest of Stroud.
The family continued to grow as Lafe and Jennie had four children before Sam married in 1900, which were Richard, Rose, Susie, and Homer. Jesse also was born in 1902 before the family moved to Cottonwood Grove where Cora, Inez, and Mildred were born.
Sam met Amelia "Millie" DeLude in Stroud as she came there to live with relatives while Sam was living there. They married September 11, 1900, in Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma. They had two sons, Roy and Norman in 1901 and 1902 while living in Stroud.
Lafe's family and Sam's family continued living in Stroud until Lafe's family moved to Cottonwood Grove, later named Verden, in 1903.
Sam's family followed Lafe's family by moving to Cottonwood Grove in 1904. and he was the only one of Lafe's and Maria's three that continued living there while William Harrison moved to Hydro, Oklahoma, and Allie moved to Seymour, Iowa.
Sam purchased a 160 acre farm four miles north, one mile west, and 1/2 mile west of town in Verden where he raised wheat, corn, barley, alfalfa, and cattle. The final five children were born on the farm which were; Orgel and Orville, twins, who were born before statehood in 1905, Leo was born in 1908, Mae in 1913, and Bernice in 1916.
Sam continued to farm and drove a Model-T Verden school bus. In 1941, Sam and Millie moved to town in Verden and rented out the farm until they sold it to daughter and husband, Bernice and Bill McComas in 1949.
Sam enjoyed his retirement years fishing and playing dominos in the Verden pool hall with old friends. Christmas day dinner each year was spent at Sam and Millie's home in town, where the entire family attended.
Sam live past his 92nd birthday and died January 8, 1970, and is buried at Fairlawn cemetery, in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
