Nelda is a daughter of Peter Burt Cowan and Nellie Pace Schofield. She is the seventh of eight children. The family lived in Nephi, Utah. According to the 1940 Census, Nelda was living in Salt Lake City with her sister, Alice, and her husband and daughter. On January 24, 1941, Nelda married Vern Silas Lake, in Salt Lake City. They lived in Salt Lake at first. They became parents to two sons, Stephen Cowan Lake (1942-2010), and Robert C. The family lived in Oregon after World War II.
