Stella Mae Taylor was born to Alle B "Babe" and Pearl Taylor on May 4, 1905 in a log cabin near Lindsay, Oklahoma. Her father was a farmer and they moved several times during her childhood…Lindsay, Purcell, Yukon, Mustang, Bradley…looking for more productive land to farm.

She started picking cotton when she was 5 years old. The first year, she put her cotton in her father's sack, but the next year, Stella's mother made her a sack of her own. She picked one row of cotton for every two rows that her father picked. By the time she was 9, she was driving the horse with a one-row planter, riding the cultivator and running the go-devil sled that plowed up grass and weeds in the cotton fields and cornfields. When her father got a job clearing timber and underbrush from the North Canadian River bottom to make Lake Overholser, the family went with him in the summer and lived in vacant houses in the river bottom. Stella loved fishing and hunting rabbits, and always preferred being outdoors.

Stella didn't get to frivolously spend her cotton and broom corn-thrashing money. Each year, it was used to buy her underwear (union suits), overalls, shoes, and winter coats. She also received a nickel to buy candy. Her mother would make their dresses. Stella never started school until after Christmas, due to working in the field.

She married Jones Bryan Steelman on September 30, 1919 in Wheatland, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, when she was 14. They lived with Jones' mother near Big Heart in a 3-room house, with Stella and Jones living in one room, Jones' mother and niece living in the second room, and a family of three boarding with them in the third room. Stella and Jones moved a few times, and eventually ended up on a farm near Pocasset, Oklahoma. She worked in the field, made a garden, and canned all kinds of vegetables every year to feed their growing family. In 1945, they moved into the town of Pocasset, where she did housework, washing, ironing and baby-sitting for people in town. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Once her family of 10 children was grown and gone, she finally had time to relax and enjoy her favorite hobbies…fishing, needlework and quilting.

Stellla died on October 20, 1991 in Chickasha. She was preceded in death by her husband Jones, and her parents Pearl and Babe. She was survived by her children Juanita, Irene, Jack, Leota, Wanda, Imogene, Shirley, Darlene, Gary, and Phil, their spouses, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed her family immensely, and loved having them all gather at the Pocasset house for holidays.
