Reed W Mower passed away peacefully at Country Lane Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant, Utah with his family by his side, on Friday August 4th 2017 at the age of 92.
He was born October 22, 1924 the oldest son of Willis and Bessie Mower.
He reunited with his high school sweetheart Peggy Stewart during college and they were married June 5, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had two children, Peggy Lee-deceased (Jim Stavast) and Steven Reed (Sara) Mower, 10 grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren.
Reed was raised in Fairview, Utah where he spent most of his time exploring the hills east of the family home. After graduating high school he enlisted in the army and was shipped to Europe during WWII. During the war he served in the 413 Armored Field Artillery Battalion and received the rank of Corporal. After the war he entered the Army Reserves and served until 1969 reaching the rank of Major.
Reed returned home after the war and received his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering at Utah State University in Logan, Ut. Reed served on the U.S. Geological Survey for nearly 30 years. He was a recognized expert on the major ground water basins of Utah and the Roswell Basin in New Mexico and an authority on water in Idaho. He devised a method for determining specific yield of aquifer material, and a method for measuring areal density of phreatophytes which became part of a Department of Agriculture handbook of operational field data collection techniques.
Services will be held Saturday August 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Red Brick Church at 122 S. State Street, Fairview, Ut.
A Viewing will be held Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m. prior to service at the Church.
Interment in the Fairview Cemetery.
