Knoxville News Sentinel (TN) - Friday, April 3, 200 MCLAUGHLIN, PAMELA MASCIA

MCLAUGHLIN, PAMELA MASCIA of Oak Ridge, cherished by her family for loving them completely and by all who knew her well for her irrepressible sense of humor, died Tuesday night, March 31, 2009, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge at the age of 67.

She had experienced complications from surgery in late February at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Pamela was well-known for her joie de vivre, her hearty laughter, her humor and her sense of fun and mischief. "She was our family's Auntie Mame," said her husband, Dr. Victor McLaughlin, a cardiologist with Parkway Cardiology Associates of Oak Ridge. Born in Montgomery, AL, on December 31, 1941, she was the daughter of Michael and Gertrude Mascia, both now deceased. She grew up in Oak Ridge, attended local schools, and graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1960.

She and her husband, who survives her, had been high school sweethearts. They were both active with Masquers, the drama club at Oak Ridge High, and met during a Masquers production of "Harvey." Pamela majored in art at Lake Erie College for Women in Painesville, OH. In December 1964, she and her husband were married at Wyoming Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, OH.

During the time her husband attended medical school, she was employed in the loan department of First Tennessee Bank in Memphis. In Oak Ridge Pamela was a member of the Roane Anderson Medical Auxiliary and formerly served as president of the organization. She was also active with the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Heart Association and served on the board of directors for its first Heart Gala in Knoxville. With her husband she traveled widely, and her approachable and generous spirit allowed her to forge instant connections with the people she encountered in her travels. Pamela was an artist who painted and created. She was especially noted for her needlework, particularly French embroidery, smocking and making fine children's clothes. Through the years she made by hand many items of clothing for her children and, more recently, for her granddaughter. She also enjoyed knitting and over the years created baby layettes, hats, scarves and gifts for both friends and strangers.

Her greatest interest, however, was her family and being a mother to her children. "There was never anyone who did it better," one daughter said. "She loved us blind." In addition to her husband, Pamela is survived by her two daughters, Melanie McLaughlin Austin and her husband, Randolph "Chip" Austin, of New York, NY, and Dr. Emily McLaughlin and her husband, Jeff Knipper, of Fort Worth, TX; her son, Michael Preston Mascia McLaughlin, and his wife, the Rev. Elizabeth King McLaughlin, of Lexington, KY; and her granddaughter, Parker Moffett Austin of New York, NY. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Trudy and John Burkhard of Lexington, KY, and their daughters, Rebecca Ratliff of Louisville, KY, and Julie Fritts of Bethesda, MD; her brother-in-law and his wife, Phillip and Angele McLaughlin, of Greer, SC, and their children, Chad McLaughlin of Atlanta, GA, and Lindie McLaughlin and Kerry McLaughlin, both of Greer; and her sister-in-law and her husband, Marsha and Kenneth Grissom, and their sons, Tommy Grissom of Jackson, TN, and Larry Grissom of Memphis, TN.

The family will welcome friends at 1 pm Saturday, April 4th at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge prior to a memorial service in celebration of Pamela's life at 2 pm. The Rev. Stella Roberts will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Elizabeth King McLaughlin.

A private service for the family is to follow. The family extends its sincere gratitude to the nurses and physicians on the staff of the Intensive Care Unit at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge for their care of and concern for Pamela during her hospitalization.

The family also requests that any memorials be in the form of gifts to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to the Memorial Garden Fund at First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge.
