NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Mrs. Rhoda Cohen Galishoff, 91, of North Miami Beach died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002 at Parkway Regional Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at Lakeside Memorial Park in Miami, Fla.

Mrs. Galishoff is survived by two sons, Dr. Gerald B. Galishoff of Roslyn, N.Y., and Dr. Stuart Galishoff of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandsons, Dr. Mitchel L. Galishoff of Lanett, Alan W. Galishoff of New York, N.Y., and Arthur Galishoff of Atlanta; and two great-grandchildren, Emily Galishoff of Lanett and Spencer David Galishoff of New York, N.Y.

Mrs. Galishoff was born around 1911 in a small village near Kiev, Ukraine. Following the murder of her father by Russian Cossacks, she immigrated to the United States in 1920 following World War I, and is memorialized at the Ellis Island Museum in New York City.

She was a restaurant owner and homemaker. The family restaurant, Galishoff's Dairy Restaurant of Orchard Street in New York City, was founded during the Great Depression and was a landmark business noted in historical works covering the Jewish immigrants of the lower east side of New York City.

Mrs. Galishoff was one of the few surviving first generation Jewish immigrants from the period. Her life represents the fulfillment of the immigrant dream of freedom from persecution and the opportunities offered by our country. Her life was dedicated to the education of her children and the success of her descendants. Mrs. Galishoff was preceded in death by her husband, David Galishoff.
