James Watt Gammie was the son of John Gammie and Barbara Jane (Craig) Gammie. He had 11 siblings.

James married Mabel Winfield on July 11, 1912 at Berlin, Ontario (Berlin renamed Kitchener in 1916) per the Ontario marriage record. Their date of marriage recorded in the Gammie family bible reads as July 12, 1912.

James and Mabel had 10 children.

Their farm was in on the Middlebrook Road in Pilkington Township (now 'Centre Wellington Township), Wellington County, Ontario approximately 4 miles from Elora. Previous owners of the farm were Mabel's parents.

James and Mabel moved to Guelph, Ontario when he retired from farming.
