Major League Baseball Player, Coach. Born Jose Azcuiz Martinez, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960. He marked his Major League debut with Pittsburgh on April 12, 1969 and played in 77 games that year, primarily as a backup second baseman to Bill Mazeroski. After retiring as a player, he began a lengthy coaching career, initially with the Royals (1980 to 1987) and was on Dick Howser's staff when Kansas City won the World Series in 1985. From 1988 until 1994, he served with the Chicago Cubs' coaching staff and from 1995 until his death, he was a special assistant with the Atlanta Braves' organization.
