OBITUARY.
THE DAILY PALLADIUM, MONDAY EVENING, JULY 6, 1891.
Alfred S. Norton, one of Oswego's eldest and best known business men, died at the family residence in East Second street this afternoon after a lingering illness. Mr. Norton was born in Strafford, Vermont, January 1, 1817. He was educated in his native place and when a young man he moved to New York city and in 1849, at the time of the gold fever, went to California, and in 1856 he came to Oswego and entered the milling business at the Custom Mills. He soon left the milling business and formed with E. S. Walbridge the firm of Walbridge & Norton, furniture dealers, on West First street. In 1876 he moved to East Bridge street, starting a furniture store there, and in this he was engaged at the time of his death. Mr. Norton married in 1851, Miss Lucy Wellman, of Brooklyn, and had four children, who are all now living. He was a staunch Republican in politics and was active in the work of the Church of the Evangelists, being a warden. His integrity in business was above reproach and his genial manner won him many friends.
