Miriam Louise Brandenburg Wann, 88, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by her many family members. She lived a wonderful life full of grace, courage and intellectual curiosity and will be deeply missed.

Miriam, daughter of Harvey Pleasant and Laura Ray Brandenburg, was born on March 30, 1923, in Booneville, Owsley County, Kentucky. She graduated from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, with a degree in English.

Miriam worked all of her professional life as a librarian in the Army Medical Library in Washington, D.C., in the Boston Public Library and in the Arlington County, Virginia, Public Library. Miriam continued sharing her love of books and reading while retired in Charlottesville, Virginia, chairing a Jefferson-Madison Regional Library book review program called "Books Sandwiched In" for 10 years. Additionally she volunteered at Friends of the Library annual book sale and was an active member of the University of Virginia local branch of AAUW. Miriam was preceded in death by her sister, Edith King; brothers, Lowell Brandenburg and Glendon Brandenburg; beloved grandson, Brendan James; and former husband, John L. Wann Jr.

She is survived by her three children, Linda C. Pacifici, Beverly J. Wann, Robert L. Wann and his wife, Sandy; and by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Krishna Pacifici and wife, Lara, son, Samson; Mukunda Pacifici and wife, Sara; Charlotte James; Timothy Wann and wife, Amanda, son, Christopher, daughter, Couretney; Corey Stewart and husband, Kyle, son Athan, daughter, Phoenix; Sarah Blizzard and husband, Seth; Elizabeth DeWalt and husband, Ted; Andrew Wann; and Kathleen Wann. She is also survived by her sister, Wilma Lachman and husband, Ken; sister, Hildred Hart; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose Brandenburg, Naomi Brandenburg, Jerine Clark and Julie and Al Pittman. Miriam leaves other special family members, Pat Spurlock, and husband, Jim; Jeshua Pacifici and Jody Finelli; Craig Pittman, J.P. James; as well as many nieces and nephews in the Clark, Pittman, Brandenburg, King, Hart and Lachman families.

Miriam was known for her love of books, her extensive knowledge of politics and history, and her passion for opera and British comedies. She also enjoyed gardening and Redskins football. She will be remembered by her grandchildren for her loving, consistent, and reassuring manner, as well as her ability to have conversations with them on any topic.

Memories of Miriam include painted Christmas cookies, flower and rock gardens, hiking through the woods, a tote bag with perfectly wrapped snacks, and a willingness to go along with whatever the family was doing - however unlikely for a "grandmother". Miriam will be remembered as strong, practical, beautiful, and tender - the backbone of our family.

Her family thanks the staff at Our Lady of Peace for their loving care and friendships.

A service in celebration of Miriam's life was held Thursday, October 27, 2011, in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street.
