Pioneer Passes On
With the passing of Edward Gagnon on Friday, October 13, 1939 at the family home in Hayward, one of the last among northwoods pioneers answered the final call.
Born at North Port, MI, Jan. 12, 1855, Mr. Gagnon at the time of his death was a few months short of 85 years of age--a span that covered all the history of early lumbering days in the northwestern area. His were the days of the mighty pine; gigantic lumbering operations with their colorful river runs, winter roads, four and six horse teams, planked sidewalks, caulked boots and lusty lumberjacks.
He lived to see most of nature's benevolence vanish into cut-over lands and man's ingenuity replenish with farms and, later the government reforestation program in which he took a keen interest.
Mr. Gagnon first came to Hayward in 1904 and was engaged in business here until 1910 when he again entered the lumbering industry until 1928 when he returned here.
He was married to Mary Jacobson on Sept. 20, 1887, at North Port, Michigan. The couple, surrounded by family and friends, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two years ago, on Sept. 20, 1937.
Services for the deceased were held from the home and the Episcopal Church of the Ascension on Monday, Rev. John H. Tredrea officiating. Pallbearer was EJ Wurster, WW Wismer, Martin Sorlie, RJ Williams, John Raesch, and William Lyons. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.
Survivors are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Glen Chamney and Mrs. RW Clarke of Hayward, Mrs. Fred Hinnaman of Santa Monica, CA, and Mrs. William Meade of Baraga, MI; three sons, Ora and Stanley of Hayward and Kenneth of Grantsburg, WI; two brothers, Jack of Ashland and Joe of North Port, MI; ten grandchildren.
The following from out of town attended the funeral: Jack Gagnon and Mrs. Elmer Englund of Ashland; Mrs. William Meade, Sr., and Mrs. Shea of Ironwood, MI; Mrs. Martin Berg, Drummond; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Olson of Rice Lake.
The Record joins with the many friends in extending sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.
