Jacob Wehrli enisted in the U.S. Army at Buffalo, N.Y., in 1871 and served three years in the Western Territory. He assisted in exploring and surveying the Black Hills, was a member of Custer's Regiment and returned home just prior to the celebrated massacre. Jacob assisted his father, Peter, in erecting the first school house north of Mound City, Mo. He came to Holt County in 1866.

Jacob Wehrli Had Been A Citizen of Holt County Since 1866.
Funeral Service Friday.

Jacob Wehrli, age 81 years, passed away at his home in the Liberty neighborhood, Wednesday, August 26, 1936. He had been in failing health during the last four years of his life.

Four years ago, he submitted to an operation to correct an ailment of the eyes and since that time has never regained his full strength and vigor. During the three weeks immediately preceding his death he was confined to his bed most of the time.

Mr. Wehrli was born in Cook county, Ill., April 9, 1854 and came to Holt Co., with his parents in Oregon. In 1869, the family moved to Ross Grove neighborhood in Liberty township and took up their residence on the farm where Mr. Wehrli died.

He was married to Frances P. Ross in March 1877. To this union were born 10 children. They are: Mrs. Ott Markt, Mound City; Mrs. Abe Lloyd, Selling, Okla.; Mrs. John Sachtleben, Firth, Neb.; Edward G., Firth; John Franklin, Grand Lake, Colo.; and Mrs. A.C. Hogue of Shawnee, Okla; John Wesley, who passed away Feb. 25, 1928, Ethel Mae, Cash. Wm., and Jacob Porter, who died in infancy. Mrs. Wehrli preceded him in death Aug. 22, 1903.

His second marriage was to Miss Jennie McDonald of Oregon, Dec. 20, 1905, who was called to her reward, July 12, 1923. Three children were born of this marriage. They are Mrs. Leonard Huntsman of Maitland, Mrs. H.J. Holmes Jr., and Russell of Mound City.

In 1902, he was elected judge of the County Court and served a 4-year term. For many years he served as constable and road overseer in Liberty township and was a member of the school board in his district for 20 years or more.

He has been a successful farmer and public spirited citizen.

Besides his immediate family, he leaves to mourn his death two brothers, John and Albert; one sister, Mrs. R.K. Ross, 26 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, also a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Mound City, Friday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C.H. Sauceman, a former pastor of the church.
Interment will be made in Mount Hope cemetery.
