Martha's death date is the subject of ongoing research. Martha was dead when her father wrote his will in 1888, and there is a court record indicating Martha died before 1872 because at this time, Martha's brother-in-law, William Clark, assumed guardianship of the youngest children, Josephine and William Sherman Dowell. Martha married Richard Dowel/Dowell on 31October1847, and the couple farmed and raised a family in Des Moines County, Iowa. Their children included Sarah, Mary, Druzilla, Susan, Louisa, Samuel, Stephen Alonzo, Martha Alice, Josephine, and William Sherman Dowell. (William Sherman Dowell's Find A Grave memorial # is 37395429). Martha gave birth to a son, presumably out of wedlock, in 1845. This son, Henry Clay Cockayne, went by his mother's surname and died in action during the Civil War.
