Professor Herbert L. Warren was born in Manchester, England. He studied architecture at Owens College before moving to the United States and continuing his education at MIT. Upon graduation he became a member of the staff of the City Sanitary Engineers in New York. He joined the staff of Harvard in 1893, later becoming the head of the Department of Architecture.

Professor Warren was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Archaeological Institute of America.
