James Warren served with the US Naval Reserve during World War I. He enrolled as a gunner's mate in May of 1917 and was assigned to the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, RI. He then served on the USS Philadelphia before being transferred to Officer Material School in Pelham Bay, NY. In May of 1918 he was appointed ensign and assigned to the USS Rijndam as deck officer on transport duty. He was released from active duty on January 14, 1919.
Following the war he worked for the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston, MA.
He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America and a breeder of Airedale terriers.
