OBITUARY
Ed Liles of 1615 Woodland Avenue, Burlington, died Monday morning, Feb. 6, at Alamance Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Ed was a native of Middlesex in Nash County, born on Feb. 25, 1920, son of the late Edmond H. Liles, Sr. and Minnie Batts Liles, but he had lived most of his life in Burlington.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Kemp Liles, also a native of Middlesex; by two sons, Gregory Kemp Liles and his wife Susan of Burlington, Dr. Edmond Harold (Hal) Liles and wife Rosie of Greensboro; a brother, Lloyd S. Liles and his wife Doris of Columbia, S.C. and four grandchildren, Gregory Liles, Gavin Liles, Edward Liles and Jennifer Liles Morton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Angelia Bartlett.

Ed graduated from Wake Forest University in 1941 with a BS in history/government, and he is a past president of the Alamance County Wake Forest Alumni Association. In 1943-1944 he attended Harvard University and MIT for advanced training in radar engineering.

During World War II Ed served in the United States Marine Corps. He later organized and was the first commanding officer of the first U. S. Marine Corps Reserve unit activated in North Carolina after the war. He commanded that unit, the 16th Special Infantry Unit in Greensboro for three years. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after 22 years on active duty and in the reserves.

After the war, Ed came to Burlington where he was employed by Western Electric Company, spending 37 years there, retiring as Purchasing Manager. At his retirement, the company had become known as Lucent Technologies. He also had farming and real estate interests in eastern North Carolina.

Upon coming to Burlington to work, he immediately became active in the civic and religious life of the community.

He was among a group of young war veterans who came together in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he served as vice president. He later was a member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club for many years, serving that club as president.

Ed was a member and vice chairman of the local chapter of the American Red Cross Board of Directors; a past member and chairman of the Burlington Traffic Commission; a past member and past board chairman of Hospice of Alamance/Caswell Counties.

He was affiliated with Campbell University for a number of years, serving as a member of the Presidential Board of Advisors as well as the Board of Trustees. Campbell honored him for his service with the Campbell University Presidential Medallion.

He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Burlington and served as member and chairman of the Finance, Budget, Personnel and Property Committees, a member of the Board of Trustees, Sunday School teacher and superintendent and member and chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was also a life deacon.

On the state level, he served the State Baptist Convention as a member of the board of directors and the Business Services and Budget Committees.

Ed was a member of Alamance Country Club and Sons of Confederate Veterans. His hobbies included golf, collecting Civil War art and books and classic Camaro automobiles.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m., at First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Terry Peele, pastor. Burial, including a Marine Corps honor guard, will be in Magnolia Cemetery in Elon.

Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:15 p.m. in the Gathering Place at First Baptist Church. Entry is from the west parking lot.

Memorials may be made to the capital fund of the First Baptist Church of Burlington.
