SIDNEY - John Almond, 87, died of natural causes Sept. 2 at his farm in Sidney.
His funeral is 10 a.m. Monday at the Faith Alliance Church, with burial in the Klempel Family Cemetery in Lambert. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge of arrangements.
John Elliott Almond was born in a log house on Oct. 20, 1921, to John and Carrie (Leivestad) Almond. They lived at the Johnson Place in the hills north of Crane. He helped his mother wash clothes by turning the handle of the washing machine, and he hoed in the garden, watching out for rattlesnakes. His schooling of eight years was cut short so he could help his dad cut ice blocks for local businesses and also haul coal.
As a teenager at Bible camp, with Joey Klempel's encouragement, John asked the Lord Jesus Christ into his heart. He believed God's word and loved music. So with Pastor Peabody as his mentor, he began singing in quartets and trios, traveling to different groups and churches. His unique and clear whistling of songs will always be remembered. John was a clear witness of a cheerful heart and a solid assurance of his living faith.
John was a strong and willing worker. At age 16, he worked for Andrew Dynneson on the farm, sending money to his folks. When he passed the Army physical A-1, he was turned back to help raise food for the nation at war. He farmed with his brother, Roy, for several years at Savage, Mont., and learned mechanics working for friends in Sidney.
John married Violet Klempel on Aug. 9, 1946, at the Klempel family homestead. His love of farming drew him and his wife, Violet, to raise their six children on the Dynneson farm, which he later bought. They worked side by side. He became the encourager, willing ear, best pal and co-worker, prayer warrior, hero of the faith, obedient servant, business confidante and caregiver, saying, "I love you just a little."
He taught by example to do household chores as well as farm chores to the family and extended neighborhood family. He was humble, honest and neat. There, on the farm, he walked with the Lord, trimming tree branches until he heard the call from heaven and went home on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, from natural causes.
John is survived by his children, Joanne (Arnold) Hayward of Bay Tree, Alberta, Jon (Patti) Almond of Great Falls, Elaine (Bud) Wald of Wildwood, Alberta, Roy (Katha) Almond of Brea, Calif., Lenore (Roger) Burnette of Richmond, Va., and Cordell (Nancy) Almond of Redmond, Wash.; sisters Annie (Joe) Klempel of Kalispell, Ida Larson of Camp Verde, Ariz., Harriett Damm of California, Florence (Don) Dvorak of Camp Verde; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Violet; brother, Roy; an infant sister; and sisters Mary Pust and Edith Damm.
