He was born in Itawamba County, MS, and came to Texas along with the rest of his family around 1884. He became a Primitive Baptist preacher and had his own church. For much of his life, he also farmed on the side.
By the time he died, he was the cornerstone of a very large family. He had eleven children and seven step-children still living, and too many grandchildren and great-grandchildren to count. (His daughter, Mary Inez Beene, died young, as did his stepchildren Nema and Herman Foster. Another stepson, Sam Bennie Ray, was killed in a tornado in Palestine, TX on Jan. 4, 1946.)
