In 1854 a Scarlet Fever Epidemic caused many deaths amongst the children of Howick Fencible families. It is said that their graves were marked by simple wooden crosses that have rotted away and accurate records were not kept at that time. Those believed to be buried at our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Cemetery in Howick include 20 names.

Most families in Howick were affected by the epidemic. Those who had come from Ireland during the Potato Famine (1846-1850) arrived in New Zealand in 1847 suffering from malnutrition and poor health and were particularly affected by this epidemic.

Gravesite Details

It is also said that their graves are in the section to the left of this memorial, now an Ashes Plot. Father Terry Howick Parish
