Sarah Lumbard was born on September 12, 1812, at Pawlett, Rutland county, Vt., and moved to Harding, New York in 1835. She came to Hamilton, this county, in 1837 and was married April 5, 1840 to Mr. Richardson Avery, who died in 1874. They moved April 15 the same year to the home in this village where Mrs. Avery died, having lived there nearly 59 years. They had two sons and two daughters. Both sons are living; both daughters died in infancy. The funeral of Mrs. Avery was held at the house at 2 o'clock Tuesday, conducted by Rev. E. O. Mather of the M.E. church, of which she was for many years a member. The interment was at Prospect Hill.
