Althea Bishop and her sister Genevieve Bishop were born in Grundy County, Illinois. By 1910 they were living with their paternal grandmother, Mary Louisa Newport Bishop, in Chicago.

Althea married Richardson Saunders in Lake County, Florida in 1927. In 1933, she accompanied her husband to Washington, DC when he assumed the position of Assistant to the Secretary of Labor (Frances Perkins) in the Roosevelt Administration.

She died in 1982 in the Washington area and is buried at Rock Creek Cemetery with Richardson Saunders.
