Sheryl L. Johnson of Sioux Falls, died Friday, January 18, 2008 in Sioux Falls. Sheryl L. Mader was born November 11th in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up near Salem, SD where she received her education, graduating from Salem High School. Following high school, she received her undergraduate degree from Northern State University. Sheryl worked as the Youth Director for the YMCA in Aberdeen, SD, followed by the distinction of being the first female Deputy Sheriff of Minnehaha County. She then worked as a counselor at the Minnehaha County Juvenile Detention Center. She later worked as a counselor for Summit Oaks, a division of Lutheran Social Services.

On June 5, 1981, she was united in marriage with Rico A. Johnson in Sioux Falls, SD. Following their marriage, Sheryl obtained her Master's Degree from South Dakota State University. Upon receiving her Master's Degree, she began working at Citibank in the Human Resource Department where she played an integral part in establishing the Citibank Family Center Daycare. She later took the position of Vice President of Human Resources at Avera McKennan Hospital. She worked in that capacity until her retirement in September of 1999. While at Avera McKennan, she received recognition as Employee of the Year. She also received the YWCA Leadership award as Businesswoman of the Year and Human Resource Professional of the Year by the Sioux Empire Society of Human Resource Managers.

Sheryl was also a very active member of the community. She served on the boards for the United Way, Junior Achievement, and the Multicultural Center. She served on the Gourmet Guys committee at the Center for Active Generations. Sheryl was also a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she served as a Stephen Minister and on the church council.

Memorial services will be 1:30 pm Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Avera McKennan Hospital Foundation or to Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
