Melvin, of Battle Creek, formerly of Hastings, went peacefully to join his beloved wife, Shirley in their heavenly home on Tuesday September 23, 2014 at Stoneridge AFC in Bellevue. Melvin was born to Florabel Bates and George Cooley.

Growing up in foster homes in Muskegon and attending school there, he joined the US Navy in 1942 and was assigned to the Navel Air. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands (part of the Alaska territory), flying out of Attu and Adak Islands during WWII.

He met Shirley E. Young in Hastings, Mi and they married on June 21, 1943.

Melvin worked various jobs in and around Battle Creek area and retired from Clark Equipment 1987 where he was a journeyman machinist.

Melvin was past governor of the Moose Lodge #628 in Hastings; a life-time member of the Legion of the Moose; a former member of Dads of Foreign Service Veterans Post #241; Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 3782 and Hastings Elks Lodge 1985.

After retirement, he and Shirley wintered in several parts of the panhandle of Florida. He was a member of Chapel Hill UMC although for the past 6 months had been attending Country Chapel with his daughter, Judy and her husband, Max.

He and Shirley enjoyed playing golf and cards as well as taking 14 cruises between the Caribbean and Alaska. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, always helping where there was a need.

Melvin is survived by his devoted and loving daughter, Judith E. (Themm) Eichholz and her husband Mazimillian, a grandson, Aaron Arthur Cooley-Themm of Hudsonville, MI; and grand daughters Brandy (David) Nichole Tindell of Hendersonville, TN; Michelle (Jason) Wedig of Vermontville, MI; Christiana (Scott) Rogers of Battle Creek, a sister in-law, Barbara (John) Butler, 15 great-grandchildren and his best friend and neighbor Robert (Bob) Smitherman of Battle Creek.

He was proceeded in death by his wife of 65 ½ years, Shirley (2008); a daughter, Linda G. Tindell (2001) of Gulf Breeze, FL; a son, Rondald D. Cooley (1988) of Norcross, GA; granddaughter, Brittney Cooley (2000) of Norcross, GA; daughter in-law, Brenda Cooley (200) of Norcross, GA and a twin brother, Marvin A. Cooley (2007) of Plano, TX.

A memorial celebraton of Melvin’s life was held at Lauer Family Funeral Homes- Wren Chapel in Hastings on Tuesday, September 30th, 2014 with Melvin’s grandson, Aaron Arthur Cooley-Themm conducting the celebration with Pastor Ryan Wieland of Country Chapel leading in prayer. Only immediate family will attend the interment. A luncheon was held immediately following the service at Country Chapel, Dowling, MI.

Since Melvin was not a “flower guy”, memorial contributions can be made to Stoneridge Adult Foster Care, Bellevue, MI.
