She was confirmed at the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bisbee, ND on July 26, 1936 and graduated from Bisbee High School on June 3, 1938.

In 1940 Florence entered the Bismarck Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing, Bismarck, ND. When she graduated in September of 1943 during World War II, her position as Operating Supervisor was frozen until the end of the war in 1945.

On July 20, 1945 Florence married her heart’s desire, Mahlon Jesse Howard in Dunn Center, ND. Florence took a sabbatical from nursing to raise their children: Pamela, Barbara, and James. After James’ birth in 1955, Florence returned to her nursing career at Bismarck Evangelical Hospital.

In 1960 the family moved to Glasgow, Montana, where Mahlon worked at the SAC Air Base and Florence was the Director of Nursing at the Deaconess Hospital until 1965 when they moved to Klamath Falls, OR. Again Mahlon worked at the Air Base and Florence worked at the Presbyterian Hospital as P.M. Supervisor until 1966 when they moved to Crescent City, CA. Mahlon worked at Requa Radar Base in Klamath, CA and Florence worked at Seaside Hospital at the top of Front and A Streets. She was the North Wing Charge nurse until her retirement in 1980. Florence was one of the original volunteers for Del Norte Hospice before it was taken over by Sutter Coast Hospital. She volunteered for many years at the Del Norte Senior Center even into this September. Florence was active in Grace Lutheran Church LWML, altar guild and charity circle. She was also a member of the Crescent City Women’s Club and recording secretary to the Royal Order of Rhuneberg’s.
