Martin Short was born either in Vermont, or St. Denis, Canada and was a resident of Vermont where he married Matilda (Norman) on 30 Jul 1844 in Bakersfield, Franklin County.

They removed to Illinois, and later to Minnesota where Martin enlisted with Co. K of the 9th Minnesota Infantry on 25 Jan 1864. He was captured at Brice's Cross Roads on the 10th of June and taken prisoner to Fort Sumter/Andersonville prison where he died on or about 17 Aug 1864.

He and Matilda were the parents of four children:
Mary Marie Short, born 18 Mar 1849
Elizabeth "Jane" Short born 01 Nov 1853
Eunice Matilda Short born 15 Aug 1859
George McClellan Short born 08 may 1862.

Martin is included in the 2012 book "One Drop in a Sea of Blue: The Liberators of the Ninth Minnesota" written by John B. Lundstrom.
