William Dollar came from Wales according to a letter written by his granddaughter in 1922. He told his family that he left home and went aboard a whaling vessel and was at sea for 3 years. He arrived in the colonies and eventually was in Frederick County in northern Virginia. He was living there with John and Susannah Lovell. War came to the colonies in 1775. The militia was already mobilized in Frederick County. William enlisted in October of 1776 in the 2nd Virginia Regiment. He served in that regiment as a private. His regiment was in the Battle of Brandywine and Germantown and then wintered at Valley Forge. In 1778 his regiment was at the Battle of Monmouth. William served until Dec of 1779 and was discharged in New Jersey.
He returned to Virginia and was married to Ruth Beasley in June of 1780 near the line between Frederick and Berkley counties. He started a family and by 1783 the war had ended. He and Ruth lived in Virginia about 6 years and then moved to Laurens District in South Carolina about 1789 to 1790. They lived there until about 1810 when he moved his family to the Indiana Territory. His two eldest sons, Joseph and William remained in South Carolina. He and his family lived in Franklin County. War came again in 1812. The war ended in 1815. After the War of 1812 William and his family were still living in Franklin County, Indiana. He applied for a pension while living in Indiana. William and his family next moved to Illinois and settled in Fulton County in 1828. He resided with his youngest daughter, Lydia Dollar Tatum, and his son in law, Matthew Tatum. William died on 6 September 1838.
