Eugene F. Austin, Sioux Falls, SD, died August 25, 2009, at Sanford / USD Medical Center. He was 83.

Eugene was born March 16, 1926, in Brookings, SD, to Elbert and Erna (Glaeseman) Austin. In 1942, the family moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where Gene's father assisted in building the Army Air Base. Gene finished his education at Washington Senior High School. He began a life long career in furniture repair with Donohue Furniture while still in high school.

A veteran of WWII, he enlisted in the US Air Force in 1944. He was discharged to the Reserves after two years. Gene was recalled to service in October, 1950, during the Korean War, and was again discharged to reserve status.

He was united in marriage to Eleanora Noteboom on September 26, 1948, in Colman, SD. Gene worked with Donahue Furniture until 1971. After learning the fine art of furniture touch-up and repair, he established Gene's Furniture Repair in 1971. He retired in 1995.

Gene had a passion for woodworking. Throughout the years he stayed busy with an endless number of wood projects. Some of the items he made for his family and friends included bud vases, jewelry boxes, toy boxes, coat racks, cedar chests, clocks and even a library table.

Blessed with a welcoming spirit, Gene made friends easily. He and Eleanora always looked forward to meeting up with their walking group at the Empire Mall. Gene adored his family and had always looked forward to time spent with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Eugene Austin Jr., in 1984.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday at Renner Lutheran Church, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation begins at noon, Friday, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 Friday evening at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
