Researched and compiled by the Kartchner Brothers

A Descendant of the Kartchner/Wilcox family of Philadelphia

She was listed in the city directories with her father 1911 - 1914 at 1615 Highly, St Joseph. In 1916 directory with uncle, at 1607 Beattie, working as a clk for A.E. Cole (suggesting a rift?)

"To Whom it May Concern: On and after this date Dec 7, I will not be responsible for debt contracted by mr daughter. Josephine Reese. (Signed) R. N Reese"
St. Joseph News-Press, (St. Joseph, Missouri), Dec 7. 1912, • Page 12

"Mrs. J. H. Gear Is at Trenton, NJ visiting her husband, who formerly was manager ef a typewriter agency In St. Joseph. He is now an Inspector for the government at the Du Pont powder works, with ths rank of sergeant. He enlisted at Wichita, Kan., and experts to be ordered oversees soon. Mr. Gear was Miss Josephine Reese of St Joseph."

St. Joseph News-Press (St. Joseph, Missouri), Aug 16, 1918, Page 8

It appears that Josephine Catherine married James H Gaar during the late 1910's - they are listed as a couple in several City Directories in Missouri and Kansas, but a marriage record noted that they married/remarried (?) in 1927 (Found a marriage license for her marriage to Gaar in 1927, but the second marriage did not last either. The Des Moines Register, April 17, 1927 - Page 72 gave a brief accounting of the ceremony).

On James 1917 draft registration it was noted that he was married and living at 521 S. Market, Wichita, KS.

1918 Wichita, KS city directory listed them rooming at 521 S. Market, and he was a manager for for the L.C. Smith Brothers Typewriter Coon

Jan 10-12, 1919 U.S. Army Transport Service, Passenger Lists, showed that Sgt James Gaar was on a transport ship U.S.N.T. Manchuria that departed St Nazarire for Camp Merritt, Hoboken, NJ, and it listed her as his wife, Mrs Jospehine Reese Gaar, @1607 Beattie St, St Joseph, MO).

1920 Joplin, MO city directory showed them rooming at Chalmers Club, she was listed as a stenographer for the L.C. Smith Brothers Typewriter Co.

The St Joseph Observer, May 19, 1923, Page 5, reported that the Gaar's were granted a divorce.

[Gaar is listed with sister in May 1930, census as divorced. He remarried during the 1930's].

Have not been able to find her in any of the available censuses. The SSDI noted that her Social Security Card was issued in Wisconsin, before 1951 [most likely during the early 1940's].

Found that Josephine remarried in 1944, in Long Beach, CA to John Arthur Arnold, serving in the Navy. [She gave her age as 34]. She was found listed in the California Death Record as Josephine Catherine Arnold, her mother's maiden name and the birth info matched. She was found on several Long Beach California city directories from 1945 thru 1990's.

1959-1993 Widow of John @318 W 8th, Long Beach, California, (1965 showed her as retired)

The 1950 Census confirmed they lived in Apt 19 on Chestnut, in Long Beach. He was listed at 44, born in Iowa, Josephine was listed as 39, born in Missouri. Neither listed jobs and listing notes that John had a further notation that he may have been able to work.

Editor, News-PressGazette:
As a native of St. Joseph, being named after the town and having been christened at St. Joseph's Cathedral, as well as having been educated at the Cathedral School and the Convent of the Sacred Heart, I want your readers to know that Missouri is not forgotten out here in Long Beach.

We have a beautiful harbor which has been home in recent years to the Queen Mary, Howard Hughes Spruce Goose and the battleship New Jersey.

Now we are welcoming the battleship Missouri with open arms. The Missouri is now loved and cared for in Long Beach Harbor. While here, the 45,000-ton Missouri will be refitted for an active future in the Navy after completion of the $463.7 million modernization project, which will take months.
