Ebenezer Wright, Jr., s. of Rev. Ebenezer,4 Wright (Dea. Thomas,3 Dea. Joseph,2 Esq. Thomas,1 the immigrant of Wethersfield) and Hannah Allyn (q.v), b. of record Jan, 14, 1741/2 at Stamford, Conn. (Stam. VRs). He d. Sept. 2, 1808 at or near Rome, NY, age 66.

On Nov. 13, 1768 at Wethersfield, Conn. (Weths. VRs), Ebenezer m. Grace Butler, youngest ch. of Benjamin Butler and Thankful Sage, b. Jan. 30, 1748/9 at Middletown, Conn. (Midd. VRs.) She d. July 14, 1821 at or near Rome, NY, age 82.

Ebenezer died intestate, with administration of "the estate of Ebenezer Wright of Rome, co. Oneida" granted Jan. 19, 1809 to "Grace Wright, Ebenezer Wright and Joseph B. Wright," with "Ebenezer Wright, Son of [deceased] made oath about [his father's] death." [Abstract of Letters of Admin., No. 2, p. 36, Oneida County Surrogate, Utica, NY]

Ebenezer's older brother Thomas, who d. testate in 1812 at Rome, NY, was the husband of Martha Butler, the older sister of Ebenezer's wife Grace. Both brothers and their respective wives settled at or near Rome, NY at what was known as the Wright Settlement. Just who were all of the children of the respective brothers remains unresolved.

The more important context of this memorial is in regards to numerous Ebenezer Wrights from early Conn. and Mass. who stem from different and unrelated immigrant Wright ancestors. Ebenezer Wright, Jr. of this memorial was claimed in 1854 by his son William Wright, Esq. of Rome, NY to have been a soldier in the Revolutionary War in the Connecicut Line, further claiming he had initially been commissioned a Lieut. by Gen. George Washington, then was elevated to a Captain, but provided no confirmable details, full name of commanding officers or companies in which he served, etc. No extent Rev. War soldier's service record can be found that resembles son William's 1854 claim, who was subsequently advised, without stating why, that the heirs of William's father were not eligible to any claim of pension or bounty land. The unstated reasons likely were: 1) both Ebenezer and his widow Grace died before Congress enacted pension rights for a living Rev. War soldier and separately before Congress enacted pension rights for a living widow of a Revolutionary War soldier; and 2) since neither William's father nor mother ever received a related Rev. War pension, the direct heirs were not eligible after-the-fact to a claim of pension or bounty land.

(The 14 pages related to Ebenezer Wright, Jr.'s "pension" case were misfiled within the pension papers of an Ebenezer Wright who served in the Massachusetts Line.)

Inscription

In memory of
Ebenezer Wright Esq.
who died
Sept. 2d 1808
aged 66 years.

Ebenezer's inscription clearly uses the word "aged" in stating his age at death. Throughout North America and until the early 1800s, the word "aged" on a gravestone represented a form of the Latin term Ætatis and its concept of measuring age from the date of birth (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of one's Age, etc.), not in chronological years, meaning the person was actually one chronological year younger than stated. Thereafter the use of the word "aged" was misconstrued to mean a person's chronological age at death.

Based on Ebenezer's recorded date of birth, on the day he died he was 66 years old, and "aged" 67.
