SALEM — Maxidena Idona Greathouse, 89, of New York Ave., Salem, departed this life on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 25, 1925, in Doddridge County, a daughter of the late Frank and Doris Downs Ford Swiger. On August 31, 1941, she married Fillmore Greathouse, who preceded her in death on December 15, 1983.

Surviving are one daughter, Charlotte Spicer, Salem; two sons, Roger Greathouse, Asheville, NC, Boyd Greathouse and wife Judy, Miletus; grandchildren, Kimberly Hefner, Parkersburg, Michael Ritter and wife Leigh Ann, Clarksburg, Justin Greathouse and wife JoAnna, Weston, Kris Partington-Smith and husband Warren, Dominica Island, Melissa Lowdermilk and husband Mark, Charleston, Brian Greathouse and wife Alicia, Roanoke, VA, David Greathouse and wife Meghan, Asheville, NC; 14 great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ann Hyde, Salem, Delores Gaskins, West Union; two brothers, John Hyde, Elkton, KY, William Hyde, West Union; and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Lorena Carson, Lulu Bell Moore, one brother, Stephen, and an infant brother preceded her in death.




Mrs. Greathouse was a former employee of Salem Glass Factory and had been a Tupperware Manager for many years. She served as a State Commander of DAV and had volunteered for many years at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center. She was a member of The Church Good Shepherd, Salem, where she was a member of “The Sewing Ladies,” where she spent many volunteer hours sewing for the residents of Genesis Health Care Center.
