Carl W. Bruggeman
Carl W. Bruggeman, son of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Lueckel Bruggeman, was born December 8, 1894 in Farmington, Iowa. He departed this life May 3, 1957 in the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 62 years, four months and 26 days.
He was educated in the Farmington Public School. He worked for the Telephone Company until he enlisted in the service and served 18 months overseas during World War I. During this time his mother, his brother and sister-in-law passed away.
He was service officer of the American Legion and in this capacity he always placed the flags on the Veterans graves before Decoration Day.
He was past Commander and the first Commander of the American Legion Post when it was organized in 1944.
He also served as fire chief, street commissioner and Mayor. During the second World War he was a Federal Inspector in the Ordinance plant. March 1, 1946 he became Postmaster and continued the duties until he became ill.
He was a member of the German Lutheran Church.
He was a devoted husband and father and his greatest pride was in serving and helping others.
In 1928 he was united in marriage to Ruth M. Kutcher and to this union three children were born, John Charles of Rock Island, Carl Dean of Tokyo, Japan and Carolyn Jo of Iowa City. His wife died March 20, 1940.
In June, 1942, he was united in marriage to Minnie Jo Kutcher. Surviving in addition to his wife are three children and two grandsons, two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Slatterly of New Port Richey, Florida and Mrs. Edith Berhrens of Farmington.
Funeral Services were held at the Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on May 7th, 1957 with the Rev. Donal Arthur officiating.
Music was by Jack Ferris with Mrs. Albert Shau as pianist.
Military Graveside services were conducted by members of Richardson-Anthony Post 231 American Legion in Greenglade Cemetery.
