Joseph S. Coombs, Veteran of Riel Rebellion, Passes
Veteran of the Riel rebellion and pioneer resident of the Prince Albert district, Joseph S. Coombs, 78 years of age, died at his home this morning.
He was born in Perth, Ont., and came west to Prince Albert in 1878. He was a scout during the rebellion of 1885, and following his term of service he farmed in the Prince Albert district until 1911, when he was appointed timber inspector for Northern Saskatchewan. He was transferred to Calgary in the same capacity for the southern part of the province in 1918 and retired in 1926.
He was a member of the Southern Alberta Pioneers' and Old-Timers' Association, of Kinistino Lodge, No. 1, A.F. and A.M. at Prince Albert, and a member of Grace Presbyterian church, Calgary.
Surviving are his widow, Elizabeth; three sons, Garnet, Los Angeles; J. T., Melfort, Sask.; and Harry, Calgary; and two daughters, Mrs. H. M. Walker, Talbotville, Ont.; and Mrs. H. W. Johnston, Calgary; and twelve grandchildren.
