Mary Jane Wilson Bear, 93, of 813 Montclair St., died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at the King's Daughters' Hospital.

She was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Madison, the daughter of Charles Hess and Mamie Marshall Wilson. She was a retired businesswoman. She and her late husband, Tyrus "Ted" Bear, owned and operated Bear's Discount Furniture on Madison's hilltop from 1961 to 1972. Earlier, they owned and operated Bear's Sales & Service in downtown Madison from the 1940s into the 1950s, selling Singer sewing machines and appliances. From 1956 through 1961 they operated the 107 Rollerbowl Skating Rink on the hilltop.

She was a lifelong resident of the Madison area, and a member of the North Madison Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School. Earlier in her life she was a member of the Lancaster Baptist Church, where she also taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Lancaster Social Club. She enjoyed her church work, watching the Indiana Pacers, and IU basketball.

Surviving are one son, Ronald Bear of Madison; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, who died Nov. 18, 1975; one son, Earl Bear, who died Sept. 21, 1999; and one sister, Opal Griffith.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the North Madison Baptist Church, with burial in the Dupont Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre; and from noon Saturday until time of the service, at the church.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the North Madison Baptist Church. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
