Known as Ned to his family, he attended boarding school. He graduated from Harvard in 1916 and served in the Air Service, USA for eighteen months. He was one of 15 aviators in General Pershing's aerial corps and served overseas in 1917.
He married Barbara Baker Loew in 1920 and they had one son, William. They divorced in 1934.
In 1946 he and his mother founded The Emily Post Institute, Inc. which teaches etiquette standards for personal and business use.
