He matriculated for a time at Flint Junior College, but ran out of money and moved to Chicago, looking for work. There, he met Gertrude Bischof who he married 6 Sep 1936 in Skokie, Illinois. They lived in the greater Chicago area for about eight years, during which time their first two children, a son (1937) and a daughter (1942) were born. In about 1942, Harold found work with the government at Wright Patterson Air Force base in Dayton, Ohio. The family lived in Dayton until the end of WW II, and then moved back to Illinois.
