Gertrude Mary Bischof was born in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest child of Joseph and Isabelle (Huber) Bischof. She matriculated at Lucy Flower High School, a trade school in Chicago, where she was trained as a Milliner. Born left-handed, she was forced by the nuns at Lucy Flower to use her right hand for fine motor skill work, which left her working awkwardly for almost anything that required such skills. Her life was mostly devoted to being a wife and mother to her husband Harold and their three children. She worked for some years as an Avon representative, and then in later years as the administrator of Harold's pallet business, keeping the books, and scheduling his appointments. Gertrude was a breast cancer patient, a disease which eventually claimed her life.
