Early Life: Loren was born September 16, 1931, in Springville, Utah, to Floyd and Hilda Losser Phillips. Loren was the oldest of three children. His parents lived on a ranch in the left fork of Hobble Creek Canyon, 10 miles east of Springville. Loren spent a busy childhood learning to care for animals, riding horses, herding cattle and sheep, irrigating farm land, and planting and harvesting crops. He attended schools in Springville and graduated from Springville High School in 1949. In high school, he was active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and exhibited champion Shorthorn beef cattle at many of the major livestock shows in the state.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: In 1949, he attended Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, where he met his future wife, Karma Rasmussen. On October 3, 1952, they were married; their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on March 9, 1953. Loren attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he worked his way through school. He graduated from Utah State in 1954 with degrees in Secondary Education, Vocational Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. His minors in Mechanics, Soil Science and Biology served him very well as the Vo-Ag instructor at Springville High School and Junior High School, where he taught for 33 years. In 1970, Loren gained a Masters Degree in Vocational Education from Utah State University. During Loren's time as instructor at Springville High School, he was also the school's Future Farmers of America advisor. His students gained significant practical experience under his direction, excelling as State and National officers of the FFA, earning many advanced degrees as State and American Farmers. His Parliamentary procedure teams and public speakers received state and national recognition, while his livestock, meats, soils and crops, and dairy judging teams won many state and regional contests and were highly recognized at the national levels. His greatest impact however, was the time and effort spent with each individual student working on their agriculture projects. He worked long hours providing insight and assistance to these students 365 days a year. During the 48 years that Loren was married to Karma, (she proceeded him in death July 15, 2000) he devoted a significant amount of his time to raising his family and running a family farm where championship Duroc pigs were raised and exhibited across the state. He took great joy in teaching many life experiences to his children and grandchildren through raising livestock and caring for the animals. Loren's true joy in life was being with his family and sharing precious time together. Some of the times that will never be forgotten are the hunting and fishing trips with him. He loved the outdoors and we spent many hours at the family pig farm and at various stock shows through out the state of Utah. Loren enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, good food and good fun. He loved to drive through the mountains when the leaves were in full color. His family learned many things from him: hard work, honesty, keeping your word and never doing anything to shame the Phillips name. Loren married RaNae Allred June 16, 2001. They were blessed to be able to honeymoon in Hawaii, vacation to Eastern Europe together and enjoyed spending time with her two sons, Scott and Kim. Loren was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions of leadership and instruction. He served as a member of the Springville North Stake High Council and as the Bishop of the Springville 9th Ward, Young Men President, Laminate Director, Baptistery worker for the Provo Utah LDS Temple for 15 years and Home Teacher. He was also a Springville City Councilman, Springville Water Master and a 4-H leader for 25 years. Loren Jay Phillips passed away on September 1, 2014. He was 82 years old.
