Enlisted for 12 months' service on 4/24/1861 in Richmond, VA, he returned to Richmond, where on 4/26/1861 he was mustered into Captain John Thompson Brown's Company of Artillery, 2nd Company, Howitzers Battalion, Virginia Volunteers, as a Private. (This company subsequently became Captain Jones' Independent Company Virginia Artillery.)

Wounded In Action (left thigh) 6/10/1861 in Battle of Big Bethel, VA.; listed on July & Aug 1861 Roll as Absent, Wounded.

Present on all subsequent Rolls until listed on March & April 1862 Roll as Absent, Sick in Richmond; reenlisted.

Promoted to 4th Corporal 11/9/1862.

Present on all subsequent Rolls until Wounded In Action 12/13/1862 in Battle of 1st Fredericksburg, VA; listed on Jan & Feb 1863 Roll as Absent, Wounded.

Assigned as 3rd Corporal 3/1863.

Present on all subsequent Rolls until transferred out on 8/24/1863 into Company E, 4th Virginia Cavalry, with rank of Private.

Horse Killed In Action 10/19/1863 in skirmish at Gaines' Mill, VA; paid $900.00 compensation.

Wounded In Action (gunshot in right arm) 5/10/1864 in Battle of Beaver Dam Station, Hanover County, VA.; returned to duty 7/10/1864.


The 4th Virginia Cavalry Regiment completed its organization at Sangster's Cross Roads, Prince William County, Virginia, in September, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Prince William, Chesterfield, Madison, Culpeper, Powhatan, Gouchland, Hanover, Fauquier, Buckingham, and the city of Richmond.
