John Closs was born in Herkimer County on January 22, 1821, and died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Aaron Jackson, in Rutland on January 23, having lived just one day past his 86th birthday anniversary. He was the son of Christian and Margaret Closs and came from the good old German stock that settled in the Mohawk Valley over a century ago. Mr. Closs removed to Jefferson county about 62 years ago, and in Sept, 1846, married Melissa U., daughter of Adam and Mary Ritter, who was a native of the town of Pamelia, having been born there on February 26, 1832. Mr. and Mrs. Closs have resided near Black River for over 50 years, the greater part of that time on a small farm just outside the village limits. In 1859 they both united with the First M.E. church of Black River, and retained their membership throughout the balance of their long lives, being regular attendants at divine service until failing health kept them at home. Mrs. Closs passed to the life beyond on November 2, 1906 , shortly after her 6Oth marriage anniversary, her chief regret being that she was leaving her husband after so many years of wedded life. But Mr. Closs survived his wife less than 12 weeks. Their nearest surviving relatives are a son and daughter, Charles H. Closs and Mrs. Laura Jackson, both of whom reside near Black River. Both Mr. and Mrs. Closs were kind neighbors, upright and industrious citizens, and consistent Christians. During their long residence In this vicinity no one ever heard even a whisper of criticism concerning a single act of either; and the memory of their lives will serve as a good example for their neighbors and friends.
